As a scout in Troop 55, I have loved the many fun activities we have done! This past summer, 8 of the older scouts went to Philmont Scout Ranch, on a 10-day, 85-mile backpacking trip! The experience was absolutely incredible, and the lessons and skills I learned there will stay with me forever.

When I started Scouts, I had mixed feelings. I thought we were just going to memorize random chants and do unimportant things. I was proved wrong at our first campout. Scouting is actually about enduring hardships, meeting new people, and learning useful skills. This includes things such as CPR and cooking. Now I feel more prepared for different situations.

My favorite campout was also the one I hated the most. It was October and we went backpacking in Harriman state park. We took a 3-mile detour on the way to the campsite in the rain, and when the storm hit, we couldn’t get our fires going. Then my friend and I found our tent flooded! We were drenched and everyone was laughing. It wasn’t much fun at the time, but I learned so much. Annarose, Owl
For me, one of the highlights of Scouting is the canoeing campout. We were all jumping off a 10-15 foot cliff into a river, and I was skeptical about it for a while, but when everyone started getting ready to jump an assistant Scoutmaster said a phrase which has since become my mantra, "you'll regret it if you don't do it."
